Cigarette Sale Licenses Under Threat

Bulgaria's largest grocery store chains might be in danger of loosing their licenses for selling cigarettes, according to a Novinite story quoting a warning given by the Customs Agency head, Vanio Tanov.

Tanov alleged that cigarettes with fake excise labels had been found in all store chains, which meant that, in accordance with the new Tobacco Products Trade Act, Customs should not renew their licenses.

But instead, Tanov is going to suggest to the Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, that the Act is made effective only on July 1, so as to give the stores time to come into compliance.

Tanov said a similar problem existed in respect of alcoholic beverages, though the licenses for these products were issued by local authorities. Enditem
