| Butt Offences Down in Seoul |

The number of cigarette butts disposed of illicitly on Seoul streets hit a record low during the first half of this year, according to a story in The Korea Herald.
To the end of June, 80,161 cases of cigarette butt disposal were detected on the streets of Seoul's 25 districts, the Herald reported, quoting Seoul City officials.
During the first half of 2008, 106,573 cases were detected while during the first half of last year there were 117,788 cases.
The half-yearly figures were at their highest, 201,247, during the second half of 2007 ¨C the year that the city introduced a system of fines for those who did not dispose of cigarettes properly.
Under the present law, illicit cigarette dumping is subject to a fine of WON30,000-50,000, and, during the first half of this year, the total amount of fines imposed amounted to WON3.29 billion, again the lowest since the city started fining offenders. Enditem |
